6th gear problems
Long story short, someone has probably been skipping gears on the way up. 1-2-6. There is some deformity on the shift collars now. You can change the trans fluid, it will most likely not help. You could force it and risk bending a shift fork, this may clear the deformity, putting things back in a working condition and eventually it may improve. This is a well documented problem unfortunately. Do some research on skipping gears and you will likely have all the answers then you will have to decide how you want to proceed. Were it me, I would give it a little muscle and if it screws things up, pick-up an AP2 transmission and make the swap. Of course, I have long been looking for an excuse to put in the AP2 transmission for it's lower gearing. Good luck.
Unfortunatly, some of the photos are gone...

I would think the most likely cause is a missed shift to third caught fifth gear and slightly damaged the syncro collar. Since 5 and 6 share the collar this often prevent movement to engage sixth.
On my car and at least two others I am aware of the answer was to eventually force it into sixth. It took me a hundred tries over a couple of days (while driving the speed you would use sixth) and way more force than I would normally use on the shifter. Once done shifting was balky but I kept working the gears until they smoothed out (I can only assume the teeth were forced back in alignment and the repeated shifting smoothed any burrs off).
Once it was working I changed the transmission lube to clear any floating metal particles. Mine has been fine for years now after the incident.

Exact same thing happened to my 6th gear after an incomplete shift into 3rd gear.I did the same thing cdelena did and continuously tried to force the shifter into 6th (at the speed you should be travelling in 6th gear at) and eventually, after probably 50 or so tries..i managed to get it into 6th with a bit of resistance.
Once i managed to get it into 6th i shifted down to 5th, and back up to 6th etc etc and the shifts were notchy at first but they soon smoothed out and it has been nearly a year since that incident and i've had no problems.
Don't stress about it too much, your fix is probably just as simple as ours.
Hope everything works out for you, keep us posted.
Has anyone had a problem with their tranny popping out of gear in 6th? This has been an on and off thing with my AP2 that I first attributed to not putting it all the way in gear. After a few incidents where I was confident there was no mistake, I started to think maybe there is something wrong. Any ideas? only about 16K on the car, but its has occurred since my purchase of it at 13K miles. Thought about doing the fluid just for good measure. It is under warranty though so yah. What to do?
