I'm sure that if you scraped the inside of the diff casing with a toothpick or Q-tip or something, you can get enough of a sample of whatever fluid was in it and have it analized.
This isn't like "CSI". Most places like Blackstone Labs require you to fill a bottle that holds about 50 to 100 cc and I'm not so sure they are able to tell you if you have VTM-4 or Mobil 1 or some other type or brand of fluid. They can tell you what's in it, but if they don't know the exact composition of VTM or Mobil 1, it's not going to be very definitive.

It real simple. Get as much as you can from your diff. Also send in a sample of the CRV diff fluid that you get from a new quart. If they are the same, BINGO!

Just spoke to the dealer...

Well, first he said, "We have to call it in because there's aggressive tires on the rear". Which is "true", but not true.

I bought another set of rims from another S2000 owner-- which had tires on them because I had a scratch on the rear rim... and my S02's were BAAALLLDDD (down to the cords), so anyway, I put these rims (with tires) on the rears. They are also baldish, but better than my S02's... My B-Day is March 31st, and my brother is buying me tires, so I figured it would be the easiest way to replace the tires that were on the rims.... Sound like they want to give me crap for having "performance" tires on the rear. Go figure.

As far as clutch dumps, etc... no, the car hasn't been abused at all... infact, its in damn near perfect condition... no door dings, scratches, etc... Hell, it only gets 4k miles/yr. Its my leisure vehicle for sunny texas days.

I sure as hell hope they don't try to deny warranty because of the tries on the rims I bought. That would be such bs.

They said the pumpkin is full of fluid, but there is a little fluid dripping like a blow seal or something? It making a horrid sound back there, and it did go "BOOM" when it happened... though you can still move the car in gear.

He also said/claimed the drain plug is still in there, etc... hence the pumpkin has fluid. They anticipate tearing it down today with status later this afternoon.

I'll keep you posted as to what is wrong.

so if you have an s2000 and want to get your diff fluid changed at a dealership what the heck are you supposed to do? Specially request a certain fluid beforehand and babysit the tech so you can make sure they don't ruin your differential while servicing it?

It most certainly would be. "Aggressive tires"? What the Hell does that mean? The SO2s are some of THE most sticky tires you can put on this car. Sounds to me like the biggest crock o' SHAT I've ever heard.

They said the pumpkin is full of fluid
BUT WHAT KIND OF FLUID WAS IT??????? This is the whole key to what might be going on here.

If you're really adamant about getting your diff serviced at the dealership, you can always bring your own fluid. Just buy a quart of Mobil 1 75w90 and have them put that in your diff.

IMO, the dealership charges way too much (I was quoted $90) for this simple job. Shouldn't cost any more than an oil change since it takes just as long.

They should know the s02 is the "high performance" tire for our car. Nothing comes close to it for the streets.

Looks like they are getting ready to bend you over. Here is what you should say to these bastards:

What is the wear rating on the OEM tires (hint 140)

What is the wear rating on the tires you currently have on the car (Hint: unless they are R compounds they will have a higher rating than the OEM S02s)

Now tire wear ratings are not standardized bewteen manufactureres or even within a manufacturers line up but the general perception is that the higher the tread wear rating the longer lasting (and the less aggressive) the tire is. Those peabrains will probably drop that stance if you hit them with this argument.

one of the best ways to avoid this problem is to do the diff change yourself. Believe me if I can do it, anyone can. Its actually a bit easier than oil change if you ask me. Also use the LE 607 or somethng similar. We have had no problem in using that gear oil. To the post orginator. I hope everything turns out well, honda most likely will try to blame the problem on you so be prepared to fight and dont give up.
