You'll find this and many How To threads "stickied" in the FAQs at the top of "Technical".

Well... SCARY news... The car is out of warranty as of 3 months now.

The dealer is contacting the DSM. Yes, 3 months out of warranty..they has JUST changed the DIFF fluid a few hundred miles ago, and it has 18k on it.

I'm HOPING for the BEST, but otherwise.. I'm going to be in some serious trouble financially.

Just changed my diff fluid with Mobil 1, 75-90. The original fluid that drained was black and the drain plug/magnet had a layer of sludge.
Is this normal? I thought the fluid would be a little dirty since it is the first time, but wow! It was black!

perfectly normal. after a few hundred miles the oil will already be black. the sludge on the drain bolt is perfectly normal as well. minute metal shavings from the diff attaching themselves to the magnetic drain plug.

Splndid! Thanks for the word.
The change went smoothly. Have the Honda bible and all the tools. Don't know if I got the idea off this thread or not, but Pep Boys sells a little pump that fits oil bottles that worked like a dream. 6-bucks.
Have heard great reviews about LE-607. Will be changing to that stuff next time.
So, amartin, I'll be watching this thread to find out what happend to your diff. Good luck,
CB

Still waiting for the DSM to contact the dealership...

I reviewed my last service, 6k miles ago, I had the diff fluid changed... and a lot of other stuff (valves adjusted, clutch fluid, etc...). I'm actually very anal about maintainence.

On my invoice, all the parts and fluids, etc... are listed >EXCEPT< for the one where the diff. fluid was changed. It doesn't list anything except "LABOR". While other components (like the clutch lists MTF blah blah), the portion under the diff is completely EMPTY.

I'm VERY worried they put the wrong fluid in... I'm hoping (praying) they do a "good will" fix for the vehicle. Hell, I traded in my last S2000 for this one, its not like I'm not a good honda repeat-customer!

Just got the call from the dealership-- they are going to cover it 100% under warranty!

NICE! Thank-you very much Honda! (I do, indeed, feel very lucky! But thats the kind of service that'll keep me coming back to Honda for sure!)

Good for you! I have this funny suspicion that they knew they put in the wrong fluid, causing the diff the grenade. To save embarrassment, they probably just foot the bill for the fix rather than to admit they put in the wrong fluid.
(I wonder what fluid they'll fill the new diff with? )
