As I recall there is a port in the lower part of the main chamber that apparently leads to a smaller chamber that wraps underneath the input tube.

Well, after careful deliberation, excessive amounts of exhausting labor and research I come up with a big fat zero. Honestly, I can only speculate as to the chamber. It only connects to the airbox without any additional plumbing. I don't know other than to maybe balance internal pressure with the incomming air?? I'm at a total loss here. I seriously doubt that it would assist in creating additional vacuum. I've had the entire air box out. Now this is strictly pure speculation but maybe it's there to slow down velocity of incomming air?? Your guess is as good as mine at this point. I've blocked it with duct tape and no effect. No increase in noise or performance, no decrease eather. I don't know, I'm stumped.

Maybe MikeB@Comptech can shed some light.

After studying the system for awhile, I am a little confused at where the intake actually gets cool air from. It looks as if most of the air from the grill is directed at the fan with a plastic shroud. There are a couple of slots that allow some air to pass but with the car hood closed, the intake is in very tight quarters. Directing
more air from that opening on the left seems to be a good idea.

These mats certainly seem like a good idea but do they reduce the volume of air getting to the intake snorkel?

Well I drove around for the last week or so with that plastic elbow removed from the airbox lid. As I thought, it improves things a bit at idle and low speed but at highway speeds it pretty much sucks. This is, of course, all subjective but I just got back from a road trip so I had a few hundred miles to observe things.

So much for a "cheap, easy and/or obvious" mod.

Reasonable idea. That duct should help and shouldn't be detrimental in terms of directing air.

Hi Jeff

As I recall, Oldsmobile built a Turbocharged 215 cid aluminum V8 which had a water injection system. 1961/1962?

I noticed that little "mystery" chamber as well. I wonder if it is a resonance chamber to reduce intake noise. OEMs go to great lengths to control what most of us think is a pretty damn good sound! I think EPA regs require the noise control.
