Hi, all. It's my first post here and I'm here because I've made the decision to trade in my EP3 Civic Type R for an early S2000. I have a specific question about the VTEC change-over in the S2000. I had a big problem with the EP3 in that is is too easy to drop out of VTEC when changing up a gear (even when leaving it 'till you hit the limiter) resulting in a nasty momentrary lag in torgue. I spent mega bucks on a re-map which did away with the problem brilliantly giving a smoother power curve. I'm just wondering if you guys have the same problem with your cars?

Cheers
All VTEC Honda's have a powerband like this from the factory.

EDIT: (The dip before VTEC and a power surge afterwards.)
If you fall out of the powerband during shifts you suck.

My car doesn't. Both AP1s I have owned have never dropped below 6k on an up shift at or near redline.

Well keep in mind, if your talking about when VTEC will engage, your at the mercy of the computer. It will decide when you get VTEC and when you dont.
My point is ... AP1 or AP2, VTEC changeover is not exactly and always at 6krpm.

% RPM
1st gear 3.133 -- --
2nd gear 2.045 0.653 5222
3rd gear 1.481 0.724 5794
4th gear 1.161 0.784 6271
5th gear 0.942 0.811 6491
6th gear 0.763 0.810 6480

Edit: Gear ratios are from Honda's website

Example: the 1-2 shift drops the RPM by the ratio 2.045/3.133 = 0.653. That means an 8000 rpm shift will drop to 8000*0.653 = 5222 rpm. So you end up feeling a sag on that shift until the engine again reaches VTEC.
i tested my shift points over the last couple of days.

2nd gear 6200 rpms
3rd gear 6400 rpms
4th gear 6700 rpms

i didnt try 5th and 6th but i know they are above 6700

if you slow shift into 2nd or dont take it to redline you might fall out of vtec on the 2nd gear shift. but thats why driver skill is important.
