uhm, the guys running 6, these are the people who go and dyno 180-190 rwhp. windage sluffs off tons of HP. your car will get shitty mileage, and seriously, barely be able to beat a well driven tiburon. trust me, ive done more oil sling tests than you can figure. between the half qt low, and a nickel width over full marks,, you losing about 25 hp. no 6qts is not OK. unless you drive like an old lady and dont care about power. then its fine. later dave

but is this the same for all engines, doesn't it depend where the crankshaft sits relative to the oil pan?

Be aware that the oil dipstick goes through the cylinder head, so engine oil draining back into the oil pan can wet the dipstick and give deceptive readings. So look at both sides of the dipstick, and then use the lowest reading.

The S2000 2.0 liter needs 5.5 quarts of oil. The distance from L to H on the dipstick is 1 quart. Thus if you are down 3 X

Hummm....

Billman did some service on my S and he said it takes 6qts. on the nose. Bill is pretty much on the money so here's some more conflicting news.

the bottom line is this:

if it takes 6 quarts to reach the full mark, then use 6 quarts.

in other words, use whatever it takes to get to full. DO NOT OVERFILL. you should NOT see the oil reading above the full mark. and as stated, check BOTH sides of the dipstick and use the lowest reading.

good points. whatever it reads at operating temp, thats whats important. never check it cold. run it, at least 20 miles. then park it, let stand for 15 minutes. do at least 5 dips. and see what you come up with.
at 5 even mine is always at the full mark. and i have a huge shop, and let it drain while i do other stuff. and always run a factory filter. so i dont know why, but mines on 5 qts. soon ill have cooler and extra lines, ill have 6 qts then...
later dave

I'm sorry but going through all that trouble makes absolutely no sense at all to me. I am sure when the car was filled at the factory they never went to that trouble, nor would they expect any dealership or customer to do so. It's also my belief that you will get more mis-readings with a warm engine than a cold one, especially with the S2000.

Although this hasn't come up, I will toss it into the discussion as well. Don
