Anyone done a compression test lately?

Bringing back a thread but...

I checked my compression today and got

1 - 190
2 - 187
3 - 190
4 - 187

The only thing was that I did this on a bone COLD engine and they were also dry tests...so I figure if I warmed it up, all the numbers would jump to the normal 210-220 range...for an engine with 54k miles this sounds decent, ya?

What is there a need to do it under WOT? I understand the idea behind checking under normal operating temps(expansion). If the fuel pump fuse is pulled, it's not like fuel is being introduced thereby "plugging" one hole.

Because I had the plugs already pulled, I went ahead and did a compression test- cold.

#1 - 220
#2 - 225
#3 - 222
#4 - 230

After seeing the last number, I decided I'd do the test again, thinking that I wanted them all to be that high or that perhaps I did not screw the gauge in tight enough. The next set of numbers were considerably lower... all between 210-217.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

^ Another reason I was checking is that if the car sits idling for too long, it begins to throw smoke out- mostly whitish from what I can tell. No murkiness in the oil. After picking up some new plugs today, I'm going to start the car and check the tautness of the radiator hose as I read in another thread. I'm not burning oil.

I've noticed that mine does that occasionally (especially in cooler weather) when I run the car hard for a bit, then park it (or even just let it idle a while) and come back and drive it. It'll usually puff out a big white smoke cloud when I take off from the first stop. I've convinced myself that it's just condensation in the exhaust system, since there are no other symptoms of a problem (like coolant leakage).

The first time it happened to me it was rather cold- 50's. I thought the same thing, but then it happened on a 90* day(although humidity was high) while waiting in line at an autocross.

Thanks for your response to an "off-topic."

What compression testers are you all using? There's a Actron at Sears for $26 and another one at Snap-On for $220. I personally like the Sears model.
