this would be good.

Replace the AP1 Valves, retainers, and springs with AP2 ones. Hopefully that solves the issue. I had the same noise for years on my Eclipse and the valves were the issue.

a valve adjustment seems a whole easier if that is the culprit compared to just jumping straight into a head rebuild.

let's see what the valve adjustment yields.

I agree in that a valve adjustment is the low hanging fruit. Do a compression/leakdown test after the adjustment and mind the condition of the spark plugs, i.e. differences between them.
sparkplugs were all slightly rich burning but didn't have any distinguishable differences to help pinpoint the source of the problem. I did just replace the plugs for good measure anyways, will report if one of them comes back different. Compression test has been done and pulled 210 down the board very consistently. Valve adjustment will be done in the next day or two..

i think this is a great idea and I will try to get ahold of those parts while I am in there adjusting them. The car pulls hard with absolutely no power loss and the noise hasn't worsened over a couple hundred miles that have been put on it over the past few weeks. Hoping it is just the valves.

You dont need AP2 springs.

Valve replacement is not part of the valve adjustment and inspection.

There is no such thing as AP2 valves (AP1/AP2 same)

My apologies MP, this is what I meant. Regardless if it's the issue or not I would replace the AP1 retainers with AP2 04' ones because they are better than our AP1 retainers. Correct you dont need AP2 springs. However, If i had bought an AP1 with a rebuilt engine i would be anal about things, especially if i heard that sound. Sorry for the confusion, just trying to help.
I'm hoping the valve adjustment solves your issue.

I went 160,450 miles on original ap1 retainers, replaced all the valve stem seals, I bought new retainers for the intake in case any were cracked, none were, but ended up installing them when I lost a few keepers down a storm drain. Anyway, there's nothing wrong with ap1 retainers.

I say do the valve adjustment, it really does sound like some very loose valves. I have mine at .010" on the intake and .012" on exhaust, and they're not nearly as loud although you can hear them a little bit.

nothing wrong with ap1 retainers at all unless you get the revs too high.
