the syncros do just that...they syncronize the speed of the input shaft with the rest of the transmission so that the gears engage easily. Yes, a carbon syncro would stand up to more abuse...but only when SHIFTING.

They don't hold the power/torque load...that's the gears, shafts, and transmission case, and for all intents and purposes, they are the same transmission in that respect.

There are small casting changes to the AP2 trans bellhousing. It may have been added to keep the countershaft from trying to move forward during shock loads. Likely due to the 2.2L engine and heavy flywheel. IMO it is a stronger case, which could actually help prevent blown second gear. This is usually only an issue with high HP FI applications.

Study the pics and you will see it. AP2 trans on left. Also take note of the rusted spline on the right trans. #1 cause of notchy shifting, hard shifting, and gear grinds, right up there with dirty clutch fluid.
