is it bad to keep running it like this? does it even matter other than not passing smog when I need to in a few years.?

Don't worry. Is it P0411? If yes, all it does is not let the noisy airpump turn on when engine is not up to full operating temp. It injects additional air in while engine is warming up, it's rich, and I believe addt'l air lets the cat warm up to its full efficiency faster, or something. Or because of additional fuel, the idle control valve isn't able to supply enough air because the idle control valve's passage is too small, or something.

It's to keep the tree-huggin' hippies happy.

when I disconnect the battery it goes away for about 15 minutes will the car pass smog like this? my car is an 05

 

I thought only the 2000-2003 cars had the air pump.

 

Your car will not "pass smog" if you have blanked out the CEL immediately before having it tested. There are flags that are set only by operating the car for a certain number of cycles, and if those flags are not set then the emissions check will fail.
