Default Axles Swap

I've got the pitted CV problem and am aware that one of the fixes is to swap the inner CV cups around.

I got a replacement set of axles (CV cup to outer spline). I have already disassembled them and checked for pitting and none is apparent. I regreased, reassembled and took them to the mechanic for fitting.

I asked for them to be installed in reverse. Left on right hand side, Right on left hand side (they are marked L and R) so if there is any wear it will not be on the power surfaces.

After I left two thoughts struck me. Firstly, when I had them apart why didn't I just swap the cups! Secondly, can you install them on opposite sides?

I'm looking for answers to the second question only. The first is self evident.

The shafts are different lengths, the joints are the same side to side. No, axle assemblies can't be swapped side to side.
