Thumbs down Bad down shift/mis-shift

Well it happened on my way home from work today. I basically over estimated my downshift. I was going about 65-70mph in fifth gear and down shifted into second gear for maybe a second at the most. I just remember seeing the red line flashing and pushing the clutch back in quickly and shifting into third gear. I also smelled something right after this bad move only for a few seconds. I drove for another 20-25 min home afterward. Everything seemed normal but I'm not sure if there really is a noticeable difference when something like this happens. It bothers me just thinking about it because I'm not sure if anything bad happened or not. So my question(s) here might be obvious already but, what are some things I can look and listen for? If there was any damage, how serious is it?

Thanks in advance,
Justin

I did the same thing. I don't remember ever seeing it hit the red on the tach though. Pushed the clutch in real quick and didn't smell anything. No CEL's or anything. Hoping nothing was hurt. Think I was fast enough to prevent any damage.

Sounds like just barely an over-rev. If you were going 70mph, that equates to 9500rpm on a stock ap1. Are you running stock tire sizes? That will make a difference in the calculation if not.

If you were going 67mph or less, you are fine. Higher and you need to have the retainers checked. Get a valve adjustment and ask the mechanic to inspect for cracks (he'll use a dental mirror to check the backside if he knows what he's doing). If they are ok now, does not mean they will last. Start saving now to replace them.

I was going around 70 and went to 2nd haha. Damn fever had my head all messed up. It felt weird when putting it in that gear and took foot off clutch heard it revving hard and instantly hit the clutch agaiin. Don't remember seeing it hit the red on the tach or anythnig. No clutch smell, no CEL's no weird sounds or anything. Can you actually catch it by getting the clutch in quick or will it be over revved instantly?

If you have 4.77 gears you are in a lot more danger. Anything faster than 58mph and you are in trouble. 70mph with 4.77 gears with a wheel/tire diameter equal to stock AP1 gives about 11000rpm. If you let the clutch all the way out, then I'm surprised the motor didn't go BOOM. If you slipped the clutch and caught it, there is no way to tell how much damage was done...you may be fine, or you may drop a valve tomorrow.

YEah dont think I ever let it all the way out. Happened really quick and then I had the clutch back in. I think it went to 2nd just sounded really crazy for going into 4th which is what I intended to do. Was just out of it and heard the revs sound higher than I was expecting and then had the clutch in.
This happened several weeks ago and have not heard anything unusual or felt anything. So I know I should get a retainer inspection but I am thinking I must have got the clutch back in just in time.

I think you will be fine. 70MPH in a stock 2000 S is 9500 RPMs, and most likely that won't cause any damage. HOWEVER, I would still park the car and check the keepers and retainers right now, and again in 5,000 miles. If they're fine after 5k, you're in the clear.

5th to 2nd is an odd downshift... Were you breaking hard also? Limit to 3rd and you won't have to worry as much.

its kind of imbarassing when you make the wrong shift right infront or next to someone.. wont lie, ive done it a few times. although, i think it would be different with my 4.57 gears. I hope your motor is okay.
