Check the injectors, asap, i've (or nobody that I know) never experienced backfire nor black smoke, ever!

Check all things related to admision, too.

Well no one said he had low oil pressure... It's low oil. My prelude would be 1.5qts low at times and it would VTEC no problem. The way I knew is the engine would not run as smooth. But VTEC still engaged. So after that I started checking every fill up.

so what are some causes for large clouds of black smoke when one redlines?

that would be large amounts of fuel not getting completely burned up (among other things).. bluish smoke would be oil burning up.

1.5 quarts low is fine. You won't have any damage. I've accidentaly run my car 3 quarts low, and my car is still running flawlessly.

That's the carbon being blown out of your exhaust. You are supposed to redline once in a while to blow the gunk out. The less often you redline, the more you'll poof out.
