Default Broken 19mm Subframe bolt

Hey Guys,

So while changing my clutch, the front most 19mm bolt on the passenger side of my car snapped!!

There is probably about 3-4" of the bolt still in the frame.

Are there any methods on how to remove it?

I have looked into drilling it, however am very affriad of drilling off center since I don't have a way to flatten the head of the bolt that's still stuck about an inch in there.

Any ideas to help getting it out.

Below is the picture of the broken bolt compared to a new one to give you an idea of how much is still in the frame.

Thanks

James

get a shop to heat it up red hot to lose all the rust. Use electric welding to extend the screw and use the Vise grip to try to turn it? That's all I can think of.

Be carefull.
The subframe is close and you don't want to soften the steal (thread) in the chassis.

Use this too

After pulling those bolts out I have always wondered if they would break on that stupid part without the threads, I guess they will. I agree with the welding something to the bolt and turning it out that way.

Use a round-head diamond Dremel bit to grind a dimple into the end of the bolt, then use that dimple to start the drill bit. Aside from that try the usual stuff: penetrating oil, left-hand drill bits, bolt extractors, small torches. Above all, take your time and don't force anything (that's how the bolt broke in the first place).

Pilot drill and eazy out (left handed cone shaped screw) would be my first idea, then welding as a last resort.

I would first suggest using plenty of penetrating oil on the bolt. It appears that the bolt was rusted from the pic. If the bolt (part still in the frame) has an uneven edge where the tread snapped, you can try the following:
1. take a punch or awl placing it on the center of the bolt and tap the punch/awl with a hammer to relieve the pressure on the threads
2. take awl and place on uneven portion so that you can tap gently at an angle to turn it counter clockwise
3. gently tap with hammer to see if it turns
4. if the bolt turns continue slowly until you are able remove it

This method doesn't always work, it is time consuming, but it does save you from using any easy outs etc. If it doesn't work an extraction bit or easy out may be your best bet. GL

Thanks for the advise guys,
but the reason for the bolt breaking in the first place was due to the threads being galled. There's no way anything is going to be turning this thing out.

Taking it to Billman early January to hopefully get it drilled our and re-tapped.

Thanks again
