A/C charge
The rate at which it can leak out is dependent on the size of the leak.
If the system is used daily vs being used once a month it doesn't matter.
I'd run it once a month to keep the oil throughout the system.
It's a sealed system designed to hold refrigerant in at high pressures.

use should not matter, it is usually a result of age that things go bad in an ac system. the seals over time can get dry and cause a leak to occur and the ac charge to be lost. Like Slows2k said just use it once in a while in the winter months to get the oil distributed throughout the system so the seals dont rot.
freon doesnt get used up, if you running low you are having a leak somewhere, maybe from a bent hardline, a leaky seal.
don't just recharge it and forget it, find out why you need to refil in the first place.
