I bought an OEM camshaft at significant expense, and when it arrived from Japan after a long wait, it was a bust. The (last?) crate of them had been dropped and the impact had caused the heavy cam shafts to punch through the protective packaging. The "new" cam shafts were in OEM plastic and rusted to shit. I stuck with what I had and after a couple of thousand miles in VTEC on the track everything still seems fine. YMMV.

wow good to know! By the looks of it there seems to be some minor surface imperfections / pitting on the base of the cams?
or was it just discolored?

The discolouration implies imperfections; I couldn't feel anything running my nail over it though
