Default Can someone explain these DTC's in idiot terms?

So I can't understand what the hell these codes mean, but my EPS isn't currently working and it brought back 5 codes. I should note that I bought the car 2 weeks ago and when I started it it worked all the way back home, as soon as I turned it off it never worked again to date.

22 : Excessive change of vehicle speed sensor signal
23 : A problem with the average of vehicle speed and engine speed
31 : A problem with the initial current sensor offset
33 : A problem with the current sensor
37 : A problem with the motor voltage

Now, I have no idea what that means in english. Obviously I'd assume theres an issue with the motor, its probably shot...but do you guys think it might be the EPS module that went back?! When it comes to eletrical, and dumb definitions that I can't understand, I'm completely lost.

First: Do you have a situation where you need a sudden braking or steering, lost control or whatever?
Or this codes simply came on?

ESP=acronym for electronic stability program. Too many acronyms, I am old school, it's "anti skid" system stupid.

It works with several sensors to detect the loss of traction, then works in conjuction with the antilock brake system to apply individual brakes to help you steer in the right direction or where you wish to steer -- maybe in the mud?

If the codes just showed up:
My guess, your problem is a bad sensor. Each wheels has sensor + VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Somehow it's detecting excessive slip condition?
The worse scenario, ESP control but try the cheapest route. Test each sensor.

That's only my guess. Others might give you a better insight to the problem.

EPS stands for Electronic power Steering. The system has the follow major parts:
  • Steering Rack
  • Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - Mounted in the Transmission
  • EPS computer (Mounted next to the Batt in the US)

The wording of all of your errors sounds like the VSS sent a back signal. So I would think your steering feels heavy if the system is coding?

Codes 22 and 23 deal with the relationship of the engine rpm to vehicle speed. If the engine is above 2000 rom for three minutes and the vehicle speed is less than 1 mph, the car will assume there is a problem and set code 22, and most likely 23. Did you ever rev the car to 2000+ without moving? IE: to warm it up before you drive? Do the speedometer and tachometer work correctly?

Codes 31 and 33 involve the sensor which measures how much current the EPS is using (I think). This is integral to the EPS unit. The service manual suggests checking to make sure the wires are tight and not broken.

Code 37 triggers when the voltage to the EPS motor is not correct.

If the check engine light is on, diagnose and fix those issues first. Then, I would start diagnosis by checking all fuses related to the EPS system. After that, make sure the wires properly connected and none of them are broken.
-Good luck!

Ok. The EPS light has been on for the last 2 weeks (Electric Power Steering), I didn't think of the VSS sensor though Ill check that.

s2steve - Check engine light is on but ONLY for a bad o2 sensor. It was not on when I purchased the car and drove it home, which is when the Power steering worked. I will check the wiring out. And yeah the gauges all work properly and accurately.

Stratocaster - The power steering does not work at all. I will check the VSS, hopefully that is what went back. Do you know by chance how one would go about checking that?! And the tach and speedo work great, which just throws me off as to why it would go back but still read fine on the gauges?!

lotus7racer - My S does not have ESP, its an '02 so there is no traction or stability control other than my feet lol.

The VSS is split from the single wire into two in the harness. One leg goes to the ECU and the other goes to the Speedo. So with both looking right, I would rule out the VSS as the source.

Now the ECU outputs a lighter version of the VSS to the EPS Computer. That leg runs from the ECU through the dash harnesses and out the right firewall to the EPS computer. From the sounds of it, your EPS computer or wires to it are the issue.

If you can source a known good EPS computer (I have a few spares for sale, if needed) you could test it.
