Can you change the oil filter without draining the oil?
I changed my oil last weekend, but didn't change the oil filter at the time. It was stuck and I had left the filter wrench at home. I figured that I could just change it later.
So LATER, the next morning, I get up to swap filters before going on a trip.
As I unscrew the old one, oil begins to dribble out. Thinking, ahhh "Xviper warned me about that. That what my oil bib is for (laid out just like in the DIY picture)"
So I keep unscrewing, and whoa...something doesnt seem right. Oil filter is almost completely off now, and it's just POURING out. Nice puddle of oil underneath the car about a foot wide and growing.
Commen sense kicks in....lets go to plan B! Screw that sucker back in ASAP and run for the shop towels to contain the growing pool.
1) I've now got new oil with old filter. I don't think the oil filter can be changed without draining the oil first, but please confirm this for me.
2) Is it necessary to put in a new filter or can I stretch it till the next 7500 miles? (Installed fumoto valve last weekend as part of oil change!)
Thanks

just flip the car upside down to keep the oil in when you change the filter
i dont really think that there is a way that this can be done, i mean its gonna come out...
just spend the extra 20 bucks and by new oil and rest assured knowing that your car had a good cleaner-outer set of oil run through it
i would definitely not leave the filter on there for another 7500 miles...especially considering i do oil changes every 3k miles

Yes, you are able to change the filter without draining the oil. What dribbled out is the oil in the filter and a little bit from the adapter lines. Once the oil from the filter runs out it'll stop dribbling. I would not stretch it untill 7500, but that's just me. If you think about it, oil from the oil pan is NOT going to travel UPWARDS and out of the oil filter adapter unless the car is running (pressure from the oil pump). So as long as you have the car OFF, you're not going to lose oil from the oil pan. Hope that helped.

It is no problem to remove the filter without losing the oil on most cars including the S2000. Johnny is right, just change the filter.
I usually change the filter before draining the oil so if I drop it there is no splash.

I recommend loosening the oil fill knob at the top of the valve cover first - this will relieve any pressure to reduce any chance of an oil blowout. Don' forget to add the makeup oil and replace the fill knob.
