[QUOTE=RED MX5,Nov 1 2007, 03:23 PM] Note that both Billman and I are running the OEM F20C (AP1) retainers.
No need to change the retainers unless you've made a money shift.

[QUOTE=TRBOKEV,Nov 1 2007, 07:25 PM] Yeah I had one mis shift around 15-20K miles ago, but I caught it pretty quickly. (non supercharged then).

I just checked mine at 80k and they were fine. They will go 2.2L retainers only if they crack.

I had a close call $$$ shift at 12K.. checked them when I got back to town. No cracks. Checked again at 38K. Still no cracks but they got replaced with AP2 intake retainers anyway.

I hope this isn't a stupid question (what are the odds? ):
When replacing/updating the AP1 retainers to the AP2 part, is it done for both intake and exhaust valves? Both should probably be done right?

Also does anyone know if Honda has superseded the AP1 retainer part# with the AP2 part# in their system. Seems like they should if they haven't. I could probably find out myself, and am just being lazy seeing if anyone knows.
Thanks.

No, Honda has not superceded the part numbers, becasue the original F20C retainers are not a problem. They just don't hold up to the abuse of an over rev of something like 10,800 RPM or so. With the AP2 retainers, instead of just cracking a retainer, you bend an exhaust valve if you over rev badly enough, but the point is not to over rev. If it isn't broke (and it isn't) then there is no reason for Honda to fix it.

Basically you just pull the rocker cover and look. If you search you'll find several threads in which Billman has posted pictures of what to look for.

Billman only does one side, because the only retainers he ever sees failing are all on the same side. But I don't remember definitely if its intake or exhaust.
