If you wanna go back to my statement on piston to wall clearance. They're made of 2 different alloys. The pistons are probably made of a 4XXX series aluminum alloy and the walls maybe out of iron or steel or something. The 0.001" cyl. wall clearance is measured at room temperature. I mean...sure 40 degrees less in temperature wont have a huge impact on dimentions, but it could be enough to cause piston slap. Aluminum expands/contracts more than steels (dont know about iron...i'd have to look at my textbook) per degree. So you say there's no problem...but you never know.
Kane,

I agree with your technical proof that cold starts cause wear. What you are failing to give any evidence for is why the wear is significantly greater with higher piston speeds. I think it is plausable to say that it is the number of passes that the piston makes while cold that will determine the amount of wear.

The original question was answered quite early to the author's satisfaction. What follows has gotten into a pissing match about some tangental philosophy. So as friends don't continue to club each other to death, I'm closing this now. Thanks to all who contributed.
