The starter motor is far and away the largest amp draw on the car. A weak battery OR poor connections at the cables will not allow enough current to the starter. But it doesn't take any battery power at all to keep the engine running once it has been started. THe alternator supplies enough current for that.

So check for a loose battery cable connection(s). If they are all tight, get the car to Autozone or someplace like that where they can check the battery.

You mentioned you tested the battery. Did you take the battery to a place such as Sears that perform battery tests or did you simply see if there was voltage across the terminals? I ask because you may get voltage accross the terminals even though the battery is dead.
