I had 1456 (auxilliary emissions control) CEL 2 weeks ago. Last week my CEL turned off by itself. Does that mean it has checked itself OK? I do remember not tightening my gas cap.

P1456 95% chance it was the gas cap.

p.s. My CEL P1457 comes on and goes off by itself... I never clear it... it'll come on... stay for about 3-4 weeks... go out for a few weeks... then come back... What the hell is it??!?!?!?!?!

P1457 is for a canister side leak, a loose or missing gas cap won't cause it. (Trust me, I've tried to get one to code a 1457 with it)

Most likely cause in cold climates is a corroded/inernally shorted bypass solenoid. H20 can get inside the solenoid, and if it contains road salt corrode the windings.

It's still possible that is has a small vapor leak as well.

Really need to take it to a shop who has experience diagnosing EVAP systems, and has the equipment needed. ( A good scan tool, and a smoke generator)

I understand that... but some of us... refuse to take our cars to the dealership or any mechanic really. In the Metro Crew we have Billman... and no one takes their car anywhere else... I was hoping that I could resolve the issue myself instead of bugging Bill since he is inundated with the upcoming Tech Day.

I could just replace the solenoid, but have read where that did not resolve the issue... I have cleaned the connectors myself, etc.... It must be an intermittent leak because my CEL comes on a goes off every few weeks or so.
