Changing the A/C Micron Filter (Pics)
it doesn't take much to make these things look bad, mine was only in for one year and much less than 15k miles, and it looked just as bad as the others.
I found a large flat tip screwdriver worked well to push out the small T clips from underneath, didn't break any, I tried the 5mm socket thing but I couldn't get enough force on them to pop them out. Maybe it was just my technique.
I didn't realize that it was a two parts, I threw out the tray with the replaceable filter, I had to order a new tray for it. stupid me.

Changed mine last season and i looked at it again after no more than 14 km and it was pretty dirty! definately enough to strain the system. So I just washed the filter out...seemed to come pretty clean and the filter media didnt seem to get affected much
I saw the 5mm socket tip before I changed the filter, and kept thinking to myself, "don't drop it, don't drop it, don't drop it" ...
... and before I could get the first clip out, I dropped it, never to be found again.
The method I used to get the snaps out:
1. The snaps are held in the rubber seal by two plastic prongs inside a hole in the seal.
2. Just carefully pull on the rubber seal (like you're stretching it to make it longer) to stretch the hole over the two prongs, and lift the rubber seal up, one snap at a time. I only had to do this for like four snaps.
3. The plastic snap will now be loosely in the cover. I used a baby needle nosed pliers (I've had the thing for decades and it comes in soooo handy). It's easy to slide the two sides of the pliers under the plastic prongs, squeeze a little to keep the snap from flying off, and lift straight up to gently pop it out.
4. After you're done replacing the filter, put the snaps back in the rubber seal (stretch the seal over the prongs), and snap it shut.

I need to order some new clips for the seal. Does it look like the clips are number 29 in this?

Yeah if you are going to replace more than 3 T-clips you might consider buying a whole new weatherstripping set, it is about the same price as 3-4 clips. (ask me how I know
)
Honestly, the best way I found to pop out the clips is to push on them from the bottom with a large flat head screw driver, the 5mm socket thing seemed a bit odd to push, with the flat head they pop out nicely.
I've often though of putting a layer of foam over the filter to keep it cleaner, It's odd that the cabin filter gets much dirtier than the intake air filter.
