Default Check Engine Light On

driving home yesterday i had a check engine light come on, first thing comes to mind the gas cap not on right (the car drove totally the same so i didnt think it was mech/electric problem) 5 mins later im home and turns out the cap was loose, so i tighten it and then go get 5 gallons of gas to see if the light may reset with different pressure in the tank. nope.... so what do i do? does the check engine light need to be reset every time it is tripped, or is there something else possibly wrong? thanks for the help.

The CEL will eventually reset itself if the problem is resolved. If you don't want to wait, you can either go to an Autozone to have them pull and reset the code (free), or you can pull the ECU backup fuse (#25).

i would wait for it to reset it self, normally 3-4 driving cycles.
