Default Cleaning axles?

I'm in the middle of replacing my rear wheel bearing and the hub assembly was a PITA to remove from the axle. Once I got it off I see there is a lot of surface rust on the splines and curved portion of the axle on the outer side of the speed sensor ring. Anyone have any idea if I should try and clean this up? I was going to take a brush to the splines but should I worry about the rest of it? Thanks in advance.
