Default Clunking Noise from Rear

Hi everyone,

I've been noticing a random clunking noise coming from the rear at the odd times. Does anyone know what this is? Is it something I should be worried about? I'm thinking that it may be from the differential.

Thanks,
Andrew

Odd times as in when? There are two "clunks" that are popular on our cars. First one being the rear axle nuts not torqued to spec (220lbs/ft = correct spec). This "clunk" (more commonly referred to as a "click") occurs when you start moving from a standstill. The second one is when you place the car in to first gear or second gear quickly from a standstill. It is completely normal.

kluux1291. The symptoms are almost identical to the first one you explained. It's a click or clunk when I start moving from a standstill usually. Hmmm... I guess the rear axle nuts need to be torqued properly? Is this something big to worry about?

The axle nut replacement is an inexpensive fix. They are about $7 each. I had my local mechanic replace mine. They need to be torqued to the new spec as mentioned earlier as well as "staked". My mechanic did not have a torque wrench for that amount. I used the AUTO-ZONE loaner program (free).

You don't even have to replace the axle nut. Something to worry about? Your bearings might go bad quicker than usual. PMed you a link.
