Some folks have expensive special equipment to reset electronic odometers. They are usually required by law to have an Odometer Certificate in good order in hand prior to working on or resetting an odo. They will chage about $300 for this service on average.

In the state of Illinois, if you are found guilty of odometer fraud, the fine is $1,500 or 3 x any damage amount that the claimant may be able to prove, whichever is higher. In addition, all court costs and attorney fees are added to the fine or damages.
