Default ? on clutch..

on my 02 S2K, at times I can smell what's either brakes(don't think it's that) or the clutch.. This happens when I'm driving down the freeway, at a set speed in gear be it 4th, 5th 6th etc). The clutch dosn't seem to be slipping in any gear, and when driving spirited I can get it to chirp when shifting from 1st to 2nd..

It also seems to be disengauging completely with about 3/4 to 1" from when I press down on the clutch pedal, which seems to be less than when it was newer..

now my question is, is the clutch wore out and in need of a replacement or am I worried about nothing?

If you're not slipping, your clutch still has more life in it. IMO, you shouldn't worry until it starts slipping. Once that happens, then it's time to change it.

The clutch pedal engagement point may just be a perception thing, since the S2000 has a hydraulic clutch which adjusts automatically. But if you're low on clutch fluid, then you may want to top off the reservoir. Do a search to get more info on this.

Burning clutch smell similar to burning brakes. It's possible that there is a delay in the time it takes the smell to get to the cabin. If you're doing some serious launching, then you may be smelling the clutch. Make sure that your parking brake isn't parially engaged.

Are you able to coast out-of-gear without the car slowing down a lot? Does it pull to one side a little after braking? It's possible that you have a sticking brake caliper that's eating up some of your brake pad. If you do, you'll notice significantly more break pad wear on one side.

I checked the clutch master cylinder fluid level, it's fine.. car coasts fine out of gear, dosn't pull to any side etc..

I didn't think of a time delay either on smelling the clutch..

I still think that I'll buy an ACT street clutch, and replace it while I have the time.. I'm driving to Maine from San Diego and really don't want it going out on me on that drive.. (especally going over the Colorado Rockies)
