Default Clutch

Hi all. Just been out in the beast. 12000 miles on the clock and I got clutch slip real bad. I was on a quite steep bit of road and wanted to get the tail out when pulling off round the corner, but the clutch just slipped. It stunk! Is this normal?

The slip or the smell? A "burnt" clutch smells terrible. The slip can be caused by a few things. Worn out clutch disk, low clutch fluid, faulty slave cylinder, driver error, the list goes on.

I disagree. Low clutch fluid won't cause clutch slipping. A faulty slave cylinder causing those symptoms is highly unlikely. You probably have a worn cluth. There are other possibilities but if your clutch pedal feels normal, you're going to have to drop the tranny and see what you have. Burning your clutch wears it out extremely fast.

A worn clutch in 12,000 miles is poor but it isn't a record. I've seen a few others claim less miles on their clutches.....

If you can feel freeplay in the clutch pedal (and you should) your clutch is toast. An over adjusted clutch master cylinder pushrod can cause slip, but I'm pretty confident you wont find that.

Correct ^ ...clutch fluid has nothing to do with the clutch's abilty to grab.

It has everything to do with a clutch's ability to disengage, to allow proper shifting.

Normal driving the clutch feels fine, like new. I have tried to put it under load again but it doesn't slip. I'm going to get it checked out still. Annoying. Don't suppose it's a warrantee item? I have 3 years left

I'm not even remotely surprised that a dealership would misinform me, but I went and had my trans flushed the other day and asked that they also replace "any fluids associated with the clutch." I was quickly informed I was wrong and that it was a totally dry clutch. While the clutch itself may be dry there is still hydraulic fluid that operates the slave cylinder, correct? I'm assuming that's what you are referring to and if so, what's the "proper" way to go about replacing this as the dealership obviously has no clue.
