Clutch clunk in reverse
BACK form the dead
I'm getting this clunk as well. It's when you release and depress the clutch in reverse. It's ONLY reverse though.
If you put the car in reverse, let out and push in the clutch before it stalls just to engauge the driveshaft it has a clunk. Sounds like play in the shaft, u-joints, diff??
Did anyone figure out what this problem is?

I get the clunk when putting in 1st gear.
It's very similar to putting a motorcycle in 1st gear from neutral...but don't know why the s2k is like that...
Shifting to 4th gear (without letting out the clutch) before shifting to reverse will take away the clunk.

I just started noticing the noise after I had my clutch replaced when Honda replaced the transmission. I get the noise when I engage the clutch (more noticable the faster I engage the clutch in reverse) while I'm moving in reverse. No evidence of this noise in any forward gears. My dealer says this is common. Will do some more research to verify.
I certain that it's not a U joint. The noise is coming from the transmission and bell housing area - and it's not the rear end or rear brakes. The noise is directly related to the clutch pedal being pushed in - only in reverse - and is completely independent of any brake actuation.
My car is still making the noise and I've done some investigating and still haven't found a definitive answer. I'm going to take my car to an independent transmission/axle/driveshaft specialist here in town. The company is call Blumenthalls and they have a solid reputation.
I'm fairly certain it's clutch/transmission related. I've played around trying to see what conditions influence the noise.
It doesn't occur when the car is not moving or is moving extremely slow while working the clutch. It occurs most prominently when the car is moving at a normal backing speed and I push the cluch pedal in rapidly. The noise is less noticable when the clutch is pressed in more slowly. The noise is almost non-existent when the car is driven relatively fast in reverse and the clutch is pushed in (rapidly or slowly).
The noise is kind of like a chunk and rattle (simultaneously) and isn't really the same as the first gear chunk some owners get when engaging first gear too rapidly at a stop. The noise sounds similar to a clutch spring rattle and is just slightly less than a second to a second in duration -
Has anyone had any luck in determining what this noise is?

I have not had any luck yet. I agree it's not the U-joint as I suspected. My driveshaft is tighter than a _______. Heh fill in the blank with your word of choice
Not sure what it is. I suspect it could be some sort of brace holding the tranny in place that has come slightly loose. I have the same EXACT problem you have so you're not alone. Please post a result if you find out.
Thanks in advance.

I guess this must be the first honda for you guys.
There's no syncro for reverse. Plus the design of the gears since it's not helical and always meshed like your 1-6 gears.
aka normal and nothing to worry about.

If you get this only in reverse, I highly doubt it's the clutch. The clutch won't know the difference between a forward gear or reverse. It will still turn the same way. I would suggest you concentrate on the tranny reverse gear, output shaft and anything "downstream" of that (prop shaft, diff, CVs, hub nuts, brakes, wheels).
