I have a 2002, and it has the most undersized clutch of any car I have ever owned. I have never had a car before that wouldn't peel out, until this one. Since this car is rear wheel drive, and has such sticky tires on it, it needs a much stronger clutch. I drag raced another car last night from a stop light, and when I let the clutch out (from 5~6 K RPM), the car barely even moved and the engine revved right up to redline. I let off the gas, waited for the RPMs to fall, then gave it gas again. It still didn't grab, and it went right back up to redline again. It took a couple hours for the burnt clutch smell to go away. I have almost 5000 miles on it, and this was the first time it did that. The clutch handles the power fine in all the other gears.

you should have that clutch looked at, "from what i hear" if you take it to 7k and drop the clutch you'll peel out just right. It sounds to me like you murdered your clutch with that little maneuver. No race could be worth that kind of wear. Search launching and you'll see what i mean.

I have a friend who has an '02 as well, and his clutch is just as week as mine. Apparently, Honda changed the clutch for the '02. The '00 and '01 have a different part number than the '02. Some people say that Honda put a weaker clutch in the '02 because of complaints about the noise. I haven't seen any verification of that, but I haven't seen an '02 that would even "chirp" the tires. I went to an S2000 autocross, where there were several '02s, and none of them would peel out.

You have too preload the clutch. It won't put the power down if there is slack. For example if facing up hill the clutch is never preloaded, it will almost be lose through out. If there is stress or weight on the clutch when droping it from 7grand you should have no problem. Next time try leting it out a little before you race then just drop it after it's been loaded. Works for me every time. I had to figure it out too, took me a min. I own a 2001 it might of changed for 2002. That should help a little.
