Default Comptech CAI Vacuum Problem?

First off, let me say that, while this is my first topic post, and only my second or third post altogether, I stumbled across this site prior to buying my '01 in Feb. and have found the board's collective knowledge my one-stop shop for all things S2000! You guys have an incredible forum & quite possibly the most friendly & levelheaded car-related discussions anywhere on the 'net. Just f'in blows me away. Oh, and I've been known to "check up" on the Jen. Love Hewitt thread as well from time to time!

So anyway, the CAI arrived yesterday eve. Install went fine, except I noticed an intermittent hiss that sounded like a vacuum leak, but the Ck Eng light didn't come on as indicated in the install instructions if one were to muck up the vac. line routing.

Took it for a test spin (my GOD, the SOUND! Good thing I had a towel handy...) -- no odd idling or lack of power I'd normally associate w/ a vacuum leak. Drove it throughout the day (incl some spirited 'test rides' w/ buds from work) w/ no issues. Tonight the dreaded Ck Eng. light came on while the wife was feigning amazement at my new gofast toy.

Rechecked the install instructs and realized I'd fully replaced the factory vac. hose w/ the air control ck valve on it w/ the long one supplied by Comptech.

DUH!

Replaced the line in question w/ the proer piece (skinny side of valve towards solenoid as the pic shows) & nuthin. Hiss & Ck Engine light.

If I pinch this line, the hiss stops. I've quad checked the routing diagram, solenoid placement, hose integrity (no holes or cracks) & still the hiss & idiot light (appropriate term?).

Anyone had this problem during their install, or any moments of clarity they'd like to share? I'll prob give Comptech a yell tomorrow if I can't fig this out, but thought it'd be a good initiation into the forum...

Thanks!
Fingers

I have the AEM but many owners have had your same problem. The 2 small vacuum lines may be reversed. Try trading places where they plug in.

xviper - thx for the reply; I did try this & it did kill the hiss, but Ck Engine light remains on (after engine cooled, no less) & this config contradicts the diagram in the install instructs.

I wish that Helms manual would get here a bit quicker...

Just a thought. You did reset the CEL, right? It won't reset itself.

This thread is definitive with linked photos etc. If you still hiss with hoses and check valve as described then you need to replace the check valve. More likely you have a reversed hose as XV noted.

Good Luck,

Utah,

I'd been searching for a Comptech-specific issue; I think you've prob hit the nail on the head w/ the ck valve orientation. The pic in the comptech instructs is so fuzzy, it'd be easy to misread. thx for the link - I'll give it a whirl in the am

I thought of that thread as Dark has a Comptech unit. Please PM if you still have an issue. As Dark noted make sure you disconnect for at least 30 seconds to clear the ECU.

Okay, finally got some resolve on this thing:
- Check valve was oriented correctly.
- Spoke to Bob & Chad (Shad?) @ Comptech who were both great & walked me through to verify my routing, which was OK.
- Started to suspect a leaky hose, so I checked every damn one w/ a vacuum pump - all OK.

So what's the most asonine thing I could have mucked up? The relocated solenoid value was mounted UPSIDE DOWN, giving the impression that my routing was okay, when it was, in fact inverted between the 5'' and 22'' hoses.

Ah, well - 'tis all forgotten w/ that sweet, sweet sound coming from under the hood. Thanks for the input guys, I've found yet another way to 'hose' this install up...

BTW, I'm convinced a CAI is the best bang-for-buck perf. mod out there for our cars, but now I've got HP-itis... wonder what'll come next next??
