Default Convertible Failure common?

I have an '03 with 33k miles on it (bought 6/03), and the top started fraying in two places (inside out). Soon there was light visible through the holes. I was curious how many people out there have had this happen to them. Honda tried to claim it was a standard wear issue, as if everyone suffered a top failure at 4.5 years old and/or 33k miles . My argument was if that's the case, we should expect everyone for the last 3 years to be replacing their tops...is this the case (I doubt it...)?

Thanks for your input!
Joe

I just had an aftermarket company replace the top on mine (a deal with our used car lot at the dealership I work for). We do a LOT of work with this company for upholstery and tops, so I'm not worried... But my car only has 25K and its a 2005. It had a tear near the pass side on the roof portion about 6 inches from the back of the pass side window.

Sorry, I don't quite understand. Factory warranty is 3 years; your top crapped out at 4.5 years?

First, thanks for the replies!

Yeah - I was not expecting the warranty to cover it, just was wondering how many owners had this happen. I was a little amazed at the lack of longevity (being that it's a Honda) but also know it's a wear item that will fail after time. 5 years is not unreasonable for a top failure, but when I asked the dealership how many people had tops replaced, they said a couple. I thought maybe something was wrong with my setup in particular. Anyway, I will be replacing my top because there's no way I would get something other than an S2000 (as I'm sure many on this site would agree).

Good to see others with similar low mileage having failures...or should I say bad to see... At least I know I'm not unique.

P.S. Honda told me the top was only warrantied for 12 months or 12,000 miles not the full 3 years as it was a wear item like the clutch, brakes, or tires.

I have 127K on my '01, and have driven it for over 6 years. The top stll looks like new. I look forward to a glass window someday but the plastic is still reasoanably clear. I keep the window covered in the sun with a BMW felt cover availible for the Z3, at BMW dealers for less than $20.
