Smile Cylinder wall scoring

Hi guys I am doing a 2mm head gasket install this weekend. When I removed the head, upon cylinder wall inspection I noticed light scratching on cylinders 1 and 3. The scratches don

FYI, you have the wrong coolant in you motor.

seeing the scoring isnt horrible and pretty normal for a used motor. feeling it with your finger isn't good, and if it did catch your fingernail then that would be pretty bad.

what was compression on it before hand?

I'm with the previous post, put it back together, it should be fine, but the motor isnt "new"

Oil jets man. I would be 99.9% sure you have the old design that comes with MY00-early MY02. Given the fact that you are turbo as well this just adds to the lubrication/heat issues. Check your plugs too. I've heard of pieces chipping off and causing scratches. Change the oil bolts for sure though. If you notice there is another thread with an early 02 that has scuffed cylinder walls too.

I noticed very slight scoring on cylinder #2 around 50k miles. My finger nail did not catch. I reassembled and have driven another 40k miles without an issue.

update:

7k miles further ... started burning a lot of oil ... low compression in each cylinder ... 3 of four cylinders were scored ... caused by broken rings (probably from detonation)

I changed to ap2 oil squirters when I installed the turbo kit. So unless it happened before that I dont think that is the cause. Also the plugs look good, no chips or such.

looks like your motor inhaled something. Have you ever run without a filter or had the filter off for a bit by mistake? Just run as is and keep checking oil consumption, compression and leak down to measure wear on the motor.

It looks somewhat normal to me . I have seen much worse , even bad enough so my nail would catch the scratches . Those engines ran perfectly fine ! If you cant feel it with youre nail then it is fine . Boost away !
