Default Dealer upsells

Hi everyone.. Just had my S in for 60,000 kilometre service and am having oil changed and coolant replaced. Tech recommend having the rad cap replaced as a preventative measure. No overheating issues ever noticed, everything checks out fine. I've never replaced a rad cap on any vehicle in my life, let alone one with 60,000 km (36,000 miles) or ever heard of preventative replacement. Anyone heard of this? Car is an '02. Thanks

Radiator cap? Unless it's cracked or broken...don't see why you should. Did he perhaps mean thermostat?

The seal goes bad on them but yeah, he's trying to upsell you because your rad cap IS 13 years old ya know. If the seal looks OK and the spring doesn't look all crappy then it should be OK but I'd really only be interested in an OEM cap. List price on it is only like $13 in the US.

I work for Honda as a tech, and I'm baffled as to why he's recommending a rad cap?

That's such a silly upsell, unless like others have already mentioned that the cap has a damaged seal or doesn't hold pressure when tested, but if it's just for the heck of it's that's stupid.

Nope, clearly says radiator cap on the service report. The service advisor says "they" recommend changing it every few years.

(Wow! An'02 with just 36k miles. Very cool. My '03 passed that milestone many years ago.)

Take a look at it yourself. Should be no reason to replace the cap...thermostat maybe but not the cap.

If your not having any issues, I'd pass on replacing it. When it starts to go, you'll know! And it's an easy fix. He was definitely trying to upsell.
