Today I took my car to be serviced where my step-father works, it's a very nice Mercedes-Benz dealer here in Georgia (Atlanta Classic Cars). I figured even though my car is not a MB they must do good work. I figured I would take it there because I get a discount on the labor. I bought all the fluids myself and brought them there to be used. I had the following work done. Some of the work is a little premature on a car with 23,000 miles but i like to be up to date. This is already by second diff fluid change.

1. Tranny fluid change with Honda fluid
2. Clutch Bleed with ATE Super Blue (yes i know its overkill but hey it doesnt hurt)
3. Brake Bleed with ATE as well
4. Motor Oil change with Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic
5. Diff fluid change.

my question comes to this. I brought the technicial a box of all the fluids i ordered, some were going to be extra for the next time, there were 2 quarts of Mobil 1 75w90 gear lube. everything i have read says that it only takes MAYBE one quart. somehow he managed to get about 1.75 quarts in my MY04 diff. i was wondering if this may seem a little unusual to anyone? just out of curiosity. thanks everyone!

ALSO: they had a black SLR on which the dealership TURNED DOWN $1,000,000. they are looking for $1,500,000. TALK ABOUT SOME MARKUP! DAMN!

 

Wow...that seems like an abnormal amount of diff fluid. I've changed mine twice and I've never used more then one quart of the Mobil 1, even have some left over. But...the more in the diff, the better it will protect. But dang...1.75 quarts is alot.

 

pretty difficult to overfill it as the fill hole is also the level hole so the more you put in over the level the more that will piss out so to speak
my bet is that they used it on another vehicle
kind of you to supply the material !

how much MTF fluid did he use? If he used only about 1 quart, then he did exactly what xviper said he did. and he owes you a new tranny.

And for what it's worth, get samples of the oil when they drain it. You'll need it if there are any problems and you can check if they messed up by comparing the samples - the diff oil is thicker and stinks of sulphur.

 

It's a Benz dealer. They can afford it.

ps. I hope I'm wrong, too.

 

Maybe the guy jacked the back of the car up in air 4 feet to get all that fluid into the diff.
