Default diff question

i got into a royal purple binge, and putting as much of the stuff everywhere i can. put a multi-weight gl5 in the differential, and noticed a few days later that there was a small leak under it in the garage. went to the shop, the guy said honda does not approve synth gear oil in the diff, and he changed it with a 90 weight gl5 dino gear oil. he put in a few tablespoons of seal protector, said that the synth will eat the seal and cause leaking. any thoughts on this you guys? thanks.

Windermere, FL. I have some friends there.

Find a good dealer or mechanic. It's very easy to get a diff fluid leak after a fluid change. I always have some oil on the rear of the diff cover and also some on the drain bolt on the bottom. Unless you're careful to wipe all that up, you'll get some leaking as the diff heats up and deposits the left over fluid on the ground.

Sounds like the diff was overfilled, over-pressurized and found the path of least resistance to me.

I run Amsoil Severe Gear 75-110 in my 03S & 02Z.Never a prob.

It's always a good idea when doing the diff & trans to fill it until it runs out and let it drip until it quits dripping to avoid overfilling.Use of plumbers white tape on the drain & fill plugs is a good idea too!

Why would you put plumbers tape on the threads? Crush washer is sealing the hole not the threads.

Always consider the source. This one is wrong. I wouldn't recommend using this shop again if they're making ridiculous claims like this. Check your regional subforum for a recommended shop.
