it is a crap shoot how long the gear will stay together before it breaks out. If the whine gets louder or becomes more constant that is a good sign to stop driving the car and get the differential addressed. If you drive it till it breaks it could just make a bunch of noise and be a PIA to get home or, it can fail in a bad place like on the highway and be a safety issue.

interestingly, after a couple thousand miles, the noise has not gotten louder, but it is definitely constant in that I will always hear it. me thinks the bearings are damaged but operable and it can hold up...me hopes i'm right.

you're right about the highway issue, if something breaks off in the diff, i presume the car would come to a screeching and abrupt halt?

You've clearly never driven your car at the limit. Do you have ANY idea how little change in forward thrust is needed to upset the chassis while cornering? LOL

The halt would certainly be abrupt and screeching... Along with a few other adjectives I would use to describe the situation, LOL.
