Default Disabling radio-controlled trunk release?

After being parked in the garage for a couple of weeks, I found my S2K with the trunk slightly open. The battery is toast. I don't know if the remote trunk release on the key fob got activated accidentally or if something else triggered the release.

Is there a way I can disable the radio-controlled trunk release in order to avoid killing another battery?

I pulled the bulb out of the trunk light as a temporary measure. I hope this does not have to be the permanent fix.

(I find most of this automatic and radio-controlled stuff to be a PITA, but I'll spare you the rant.)

Thanks,
Wayne

Put a switch on the light in the trunk. Make it handy so you can find it easily even in the dark.
If you want to disable the remote release and only use the key to open the trunk, uplug the wiring harness that goes to the trunk release solenoid (on the trunk lid at the latch). Unless of course, you don't care for the remote door lock and unlock either, then you can just remove the keyless entry fuse. It's the one labelled "keyless":

That is one of the most annoying design errors in the entire car. Honda should have put a switch on that light.

Thanks, Xviper.

When I get a new battery in the next day or two, I'll try unplugging the trunk release solenoid and see how that works. (I wonder if the remote trunk release button in the storage compartment will still work? Oh, well, small loss.)

I like the light in the trunk coming on when I open the trunk. I just don't like the trunk opening electrically by accident.

I'm indifferent to the keyless entry for the doors. I thought I was stuck with the keyless for locking the driver's door, but after reading your post I tried locking the driver's door with the key and I find that works okay. (The driver's door lock won't go to the "locked" position if the door is open; you have to lock it from the outside with the keyless or with the key. I suppose this is a feature to keep us from locking the key inside the car.)

If I'm not satisfied with disconnecting the solenoid, I'll pull the "keyless" fuse.

Thanks again,
Wayne

On every other Honda I have owned, that feature existed but could be defeated by holding the inside door handle open while moving the lock selector into the locked position.

After some experimenting, I find that works with either the inside OR the outside door handle held in the "open" position.

Thanks, Mike.

Every car is like this, I see no reason for there to be a switch. Rarely is my truck open for more than 5 minutes at a time.

If your trunk is never open for more than five minutes at a time, then nobody else would ever want theirs open for longer?

Didn't ya know, Mike. This is the "unwritten" rule of S2000-land.
Thou shalt not have your trunk lid open for more than 5 minutes at a time - Sundays and Stat holidays excepted, when you can leave open for 6 minutes.
