Nope you can do the bumper and leave the ap1 lights or you can have the ap2 headlights with ap1 bumper which ever you like.

I can confirm that. I have my AP1 lights, but went to an AP2 bumper after I messed up the original.

The fender liners are the same on AP1 and AP2. The lower trim panel that meets up to the bottom of the front bumper is different from AP1 to AP2 but it will still work, you just won't have as many attachment points, like 6 instead of 8. Hardtopguy sells the adapter brackets if you really want to have it securely mounted. The brackets have to be pop-riveted onto the lower trim panel. Look upnder an AP2 and you will see how the factory did the update.

Does anyone have a picture of the underside of a AP1 splash shield / AP2 bumper cover combo to visualize this gap? I'm about to order the parts and am debating if I want to go ahead and replace my 13yr old splash shield or not.

FIY: I am retrofitting my ap1 ballast on ap2 right now, and it is not necessary to cut into the ap2 headlights at all, even to fit the D2S locking connector through the smaller round hole. All you need to do is disassemble the the black housing on the D2S connector, and the pins can be popped out so that you may easily feed the wires through, and re-assemble afterwards.
