Default DIY: Port and polish?

I will shortly be getting a second intake manifold and installing my enlarged throttle body. I intend to enlarge the manifold to match the TB and while I'm at it I can give the whole thing a going over with a grinder/polisher bit on a Dremel extension. Grind out some casting burrs and polish it up.

My question is, is that good enough? How much more would a good shop do to my manifold and what difference would it make?

Should I leave it to the experts or have a hack myself? I'm not afraid of getting dirty.

I think one advantage of having an expert do it is the fact that they have a flow bench of some kind to be assured optimal air flow is being maintained.

If you are just matching up the tB you can DIY. Just read around the net for porting tips as normal practice is to finish the inlet ports with a slightly rough finish. There are special finishing stones to do this, or you can use a 40 grit cartridge roll.

You may be there for a while with a dremel. If you have access to a compressor get a cheap die grinder and a carbide burr. Make sure you get the burr designed for aluminium.

If you want to do a full monty on the head I can put you in touch with a Sydney porter that have made a difference on some heads of my customers.

Chris.
