Nice DIY steps and pictures.

If someone wants to buy it cheap, logical-source.com has S2000 cabin filter for $6.38 but shipping is high at $6 for 1 filter. If you buy more than 1 filter than shipping increases less than $1 for the second filter.

I changed both cabin and air filter @ 12k. It's amazing how dirty the cabin filter was compared to the air filter. I even debated for a split second of continuing to run the air filter because of it's relatively clean appearence but tossed it if only for peace of mind. The cabin filter shlould probably be changed every 5-10k depending on your enviroment.

I read the OP's excellent DIY a couple of months ago. I still have the old frame and trying to decide weather I want to do this project for my next change.
I was thinking up the "lazy mans" solution and considering attaching 3-4 thin wires on the back of the old frame and then cutting filter media to tightly fit the frame. I could make several outta one home filter and change as often as I want. This is not as elegant as the DIY but it seems it will perform the same function. Clean air, save money. I'm probably going to try it.

Bumping this up because I thought about this thread after changing my cabin filter with 88k+ miles on it.

I may try making a K&N version of this with the old filter I took out and using an old K&N filter that was with an Ebay intake for my old B-series.

That filter was freaking disgusting! I think it's kinda cool that you replaced the element. I'm gonna look into changing mine now.
