DIY Valve retainer replacement with head in place
Started this job today... ran into some issues, in particular the spring compressor i'm using is garbage and i'll need to source another one.
DO NOT buy the Craftsman Valve Spring Compressor, it's a piece of junk that came apart while i was compressing the spring!!! A retaining pin and washer flew out as tensions was applied. Luckily I was able to find the pin... I hope nothing else fell in there.

Anyone use one of these to remove the retainers?

I have used this on my SHO in the past and it literally saved hours of work instead of using the bolt in spring compressor. I was able to puch the retainers off and then back on without fiddling around for a magnet or any other tools. My first go around on this car took 6-7 hours and I swore I would never do it again (My first go at it). Then when I went to build a motor for the car and bought brand new heads, I had to go through the process again. This time it probably took 20-30 minutes... The heads were not installed at the time, however, I don't think it would have added significant time if they were.

I hope this doesn't take this write up off topic but, what is the name of the tool that hooks to the compressor to pressurize the cylinder?
I cannot find it anywhere.
I cannot find it anywhere.

I believe mine came in my compression tester kit I bought from Sears years ago.
Would it be wise to replace Valve Seals while doing this job? I don't have any symptoms that would make me feel like I need to do so, but if it would be a good idea for the sake of engine longevity, should I go ahead and do it while replacing the intake and exhaust side retainers and springs? How many of you guys have replaced the seals while replacing the retainers and springs?

You could replace the springs and the seals if you like, however they are not as prone to failure like the retainers are. You will not be able to replace the valve guides or the seats while the head is on the car.
