Default Door lock switch doesn't

I just noticed that the door lock switch on the driver's side door of my MY06 doesn't work. It won't go into the locked position when the door is open, but will when the door is closed, though sometimes with resistance. The one on the passenger side door works fine when the door is open or closed. Funny, I've had the car over a year and had been using the remote to lock/unlock doors, and just now noticed this.

I can get it fixed under warranty, but want to understand the problem and see if anyone has had experience with it.

TIA
