Downside to gears? 4.57 - 4.77?
Basically, I am very happy with all of the mods. I have put on my S so far. I still always rear gears are the best bang for your buck. I guess the question is, does the 4.10 gear have any advantage over the 4.57-4.77 from a performance standpoint. My S gets me to work, when it's not doing that, it is at the drag strip or doing a highway run with an SRT-4. I just wonder what is better for tope end. Of course the 4.77 will run out faster, but how much faster will it get to it's top speed? I guess the best analogy I can use is this:
2 S2000s same power, equal drivers, one with a 4.10 gear and one with a 4.77 gear. Let's say they go from a 40 roll to about 130. At any point would the 4.10 gear car be able to pass the 4.77 gear car?
I know that there are alot of threads on this, and if my question has been answered in another thread please direct me to it. Thank you.

A 40 to 130 test will negate the whole reason why you get gears in the first place... off the line. Still 40 to 130, my money would definitely be on the 4.77's. But I don't think 4.77's will even get an S to 130? 4.57's on an AP2 max at 135 (I know different tranny though).
Personally, I think 4.57's on an AP1 are what they should have installed from the factory!

Here is Stratocaster's group buy for 4.57 diffs. First post talks about gearing and speeds for the AP1 and 2.
CHECK IT
If the AP1 does 148 with 4.57's, then 4.77's will surely do 130.
Since you drive to work, I would probably stick with 4.57's. Otherwise your gas mileage will suffer.

4.57 on an AP-1 will get you to 149 top speed, and through the quarter in 13.2's.
I have heard that there IS a 4-5 shift with 4.77's.
An AP1 with 4.77s will top out at 143 mph
An AP2 with 4.77s will top out at 130 mph
An AP1 at 9000 rpms in 4th gear with 4.77s is going exactly 100 mph.
An AP1 at 9000 rpms in 4th gear with 4.57s is going exactly 105 mph.

How about traction problems? I have a strong running NA car and have problems with wheelspin in 1 and 2 on some surfaces in the city quite often.. I would have thought it is worse with gears, or is it better? (BTW, I solved my traction problem by running my track tires but then I blew out the diff).
Reality is 4.57 has more mechanical leverage than 4.10... more torque at the same wheel speed (same transmission gear at least). More torque = more chance of traction problems.
But if you are cruising around in the city with 4.57's you are probably a transmission gear higher than if you were in 4.10's and are in a lower torque range of your powerband = less torque, less chance of wheelspin
I guess it is a toss-up. Or you could just throw tires at it (and resulting diff
).PS. I am throwing tires (not R's but 265) at mine!
