Default Drivetrain rattle and whine(video inside)

I am experiencing a rattle that is coming from the transmission upon hard acceleration. This can be faintly heard in the beginning of the video when the car is picking up speed. When the vehicle starts to pick up speed you can hear a distinct whine coming from the drivetrain. The whining noise becomes louder as the speed increases, and is present whether the clutch is engaged or in neutral. The whining noise has been present for sometime, but has become worse in the last couple of months.

From my reading on the forum this type of whining noise is either one of the bearings from the transmission or the sound of a damaged differential. From what I can tell the differential seems to be working fine at the moment. I am leaning towards one of the bearings on the transmission has gone bad. If anyone with a trained ear can help me diagnose the whining sound or the rattle sound that would be greatly appreciated. I forgot to mention that the rattle sound started soon after the clutch was changed out about 10k miles ago. I understand the whine and the rattle could possibly have no relation, but I thought I would try and ask about both problems considering that they can be heard in the same video. Thanks in advance.

Interesting. I do hear it, very slightly. Have you looked underneath to notice anything out of place?

I have checked underneath the car and everything seems to be in order. The motor and transmission mounts seem to be fine, there is no cracking or signs of fluid leaking from any of the mounts. I know it might be difficult to diagnose the rattle from the video, but the whine coming from the drivetrain is clearly audible. If anyone can help me pinpoint the problem that would be greatly appreciated. I forgot to mention that both rear hubs and bearings were changed out about a year ago, and the whining noise was present before one of the rear bearings grenaded on me. Also, I am getting a bit of a vibration coming from the drivetrain. I did the axle swap and that solved the majority of the vibration in the drivetrain.

interesting indeed . I did hear this similar noise in my car when I first bought the car, 68k ap1 two years ago but it wasn't this loud but enough to think maybe something was wrong. Since I wasn't sure, I replaced all fluids as in transmission fluid, diff fluid, motor oil (OEM parts). After that, I didn't hear this whining noise. I'm not sure if this fixed the problem but noise definitely helped in my case.

I don't know how you maintenance, but if you haven't done it or if it's due, I recommend you doing it before we blame on something expensive.

The transmission and differential oil were changed about 10,000 miles ago. The noise was present at that time, and it did not change any with the fluid changes. I used honda mtf, and the proper weight mobil 1 synthetic differential oil. I could try changing them out again and see if that makes any difference, but I doubt it will make much of a difference at this point.

Does anyone have any idea what the whining noise is at least? It would be helpful if someone could tell me where in the drivetrain the whinning sound is likely coming from. I am sure there are those out there who know whether it is the type of whine that comes out of the transmission or the differential. If it is too difficult to determine from the video that is fine, I can always take it in and see what the diagnosis is.

My S has been making the same noise for a few months now. I've come to the conclusion that a combination of different bearings throughout the transmission have begun to fail.

That said, I already have my flywheel, and I'm ordering my clutch (SOS) next tues. I'll probably just have the shop swap the transmission out with a different one. If I had to guess, it's the secondary output shaft bearings.

Thanks for the reply. After reading the other posts on the matter, it is very likely that the secondary output shaft is the culprit. If that is the case, I might need to swap in an Ap2 tranny for good measure. Good luck with your car, and let me know if swapping out the tranny fixes your issue.

Output shaft bearing.

Easy job. You can do it while the trans is in the car.

Thanks for the reply Billman. I am assuming by your reply that you concur that the output shaft bearing is the culprit? I will try and tackle the bearing over the weekend. Hopefully it won't be too much of a pain in the butt. Were you able to hear the rattling noise in the video?
