I got my replacement engine from Got Engines Inc. They had 2 f20c's with lower miles than anyone else so that's why I chose them. They had great customer service and made the whole process a piece of cake and had my new engine at the shop where my car was in 3 days. Their website is www.gotengines.com

Hey, so my 2001 S2K suffered severe engine damage due to low oil. I'm a normal driver (ie. don't read up on S2Ks, don't push it hard, commuter vehicle, etc), and it wasn't until after I did some forum searching that I learned these things consume quart of oil/1k mi or more.

What really irks me is that I've always taken my car to a dealer for servicing and it was just in for a 90k service 3mths ago, and this happens now. Never was I informed I should be diligently checking and replacing oil in between service intervals.

Regardless, it looks like I have a few options:

1) Replace with a new/used engine
2) Overhaul engine and replace damaged parts
3) Sell the car for parts

Anybody have opinions on overhauling the engine and replacing whatever was damaged? Is this risky or an ok way to get the car back to working order?

Any info on how/where to sell the car for parts? The rest of the car is in very decent shape, so I can see some value in the parts. Anybody experienced in this and how much could one get for that?

Given that the car is 9 yrs old and worth maybe $10k (with a good engine), I'm not sure if it's worth repairing. I've been quoted $11k to install a new engine, which makes no sense since it's more than what the car is worth.

Input, experiences, or references to previous threads appreciated!
So the vehicle takes 5 quarts of oil and it consumes 1qt every 1k miles. The vehicle can run on at least 3qts so you drove the car 2k miles and never checked your oil...I would sell and purchase a honda civic DX. Now that I have been a jerk il give some advice.

First off do not part the car because if you cannot check the oil, taking parts off and packaging them up will be a pain and an annoyance.

1. Sell the car outright
2. Fix the engine depending on damage.
3. Purchase a engine and have a professional install it (not Honda for $11k).
4. Check your oil every gas fill up!

Mind if I ask how much was this engine?

All quotes I'm getting from local shops are $3200+, so if it's a low risk option, I could order one myself cheaper and have it shipped to a shop.

I swapped my motor in and out of the car by myself on 2 foot jackstands. A single car garage mind you. You don't need alot. you can find a cherry picker for 200 bucks. Most of the tools yo uneed you probably already have. what city/state are you in?

Someone who cannot check their oil is probably not going to swap an engine.

You can buy a used AP1 engine for around $2k if you're looking for a low-cost solution.

Thanks for all the info (esp wadzii!).

Wanted to update with what I found and went with (quite a bit) of web searching and calling around. Gonna get the clutch replaced too since it's no extra labor charge.

2001 75k mi used engine: $2200
labor: $900
new clutch: $450

Keep in mind that these are prices for Bay Area, CA, which still seems to be on avg higher than what others are reporting.

Most used engines are going for $2500+, and labor is anywhere from $1100-2000 for the independent shops I checked.

Interesting note: The auto salvage place I got my engine from told me after I paid for it that they expect to exchange the engine out for my old one. That was a surprise, and no idea if that's common practice or not.

A new honda engine costs me 2800 right now, doesn't come with a cyl head. your head is likely ok.

I can do a brand new engine installed for about 4k. 2800, head bolts, head gasket, coolant, misc, and labor.

I understand prices can differ....but that is crazy.

Check your dealer receipt. See how many quarts they used.

tell them you prefer to pay the core charge on the engine. chances are your cylinder head can be resold for more money than the core charge that salvage yard is going to charge you. plus you will now have extra parts incase you need aything by saving your old engine!
