Angry Engine Destroyed?

Hey guys...

Just got in just now after my poor baby had a bit of an issue... was driving along and couldn't get into vtec etc. So i parked up at my mates and waited a bit (hours) then went back to it to check the oil etc and the level was fine so i decided to head home and i got to the end of his road and the engine stalled. Now I had heard about this and figured that it was due to the MAP sensor being on the way out. So I started her back up after a couple of minutes and oil pressure was fine and worked perfect.... so again I started to drive off and about 20 minutes later I hear a tap noise (like a bolt hitting on metal).

I start to brake as fast as i can and put in the clutch then pop out comes a bolt, hits the underneath of my car (can hear it) and the check engine light comes on. I fear for the worst as I jump out the car and run behind me to find the bolt... I did so (post pic later) and managed to locate it on the engine....

Basically the sprocket that is in contact with both cam sprockets has a bolt running through it and I think that it has sheered off and has fallen away... now I am guessing that the valve has hit a piston somewhere along the very short time it was rotating but unaware of how much damage it has caused...

My main question is if that major sprocket drops does it still stay in contact with both cams or not? If so Honda are genious', if not I am up s**t creek without a paddle!!

Just gonna head to bed now, but early in morning i will post up pics of bolt etc. and the stripped head for the final verdict.

Pull the head...the damage may not be as bad as you think. Might just have a couple bent valves.

I'd bet the head was off before some time in the car's past and that the timing chain sprocket bolt wasn't re-installed correctly.

I had a look on the bolt and it seems it has sheered off, there are only about 3mm of thread remaining on the bolt itself... It looks as if the bearing has just seized and risen up the shaft to the thicker end, gripped, then just sheered the hell out of the thing...

I know you can't really tell at the moment what would be better, but at what stage would it be better to just replace the engine rather than getting the piston/valves etc replaced. I mean I can EASILY do it myself, but my dad thinks it would be better just sending it to a shop..?

I not sure how a bolt from the cams would end up coming of and going down the road.
Surely it would stay under the rocker cover and lunch the valve train?
You sure that bolt came from there?
Pull the plugs and have a look for any damage on the piston crowns
Any pics?

Yep number 3 came out, I knew the engine would be buggered from something like that falling out... the bolt had SHEARED as you can see the twist marks on the end of the bolt... It will have to be rebuilt... will take out the sparkies and have a look but tbh I don't think I will be able to see too much...

Only thing was just before the bolt come out i had clutch in and was turning off the engine... the sprockets have NO damage marks from anything skidding so I am unsure if tthere is major piston damage or not.... guessing it's more 90% that there will be but still 10% is better than 0% lol

Hello , hate to hear that find someone with a video bore scope, they should be able to inspect cyl bore and look up at valves.
