The back one is much harder to lose so you should be ok there.

If the washer isn't with the cog then it has fallen. If you are lucky you may be able to get it with a long magnet.

I'm pretty sure the broken off end of the bolt will come out easily, Use a scribe or point punch to rotate it in the right direction.

Just got back from the guy about the engine...

It seems it needs a new head, there doesn't seem to be any damage to the piston or walls etc, it would of been just a few valves but the timing gear had rotated against the head casting causing some junks to come out so he is now sourcing a head.

Going to get the oil banjo bolts updated to the new onces, new TCT and chain and also trying to have a look at the best valve retainers for the new head, just incase someone has mech. overrevd it... don't want to do all this work and a valve drops X miles down the road....

With all the metal shavings floating around in that block you might want to consider a rebuild of the lower end.

That really sucks man. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? Should we check the bolt occasionally and re-torque? Or is this a freak thing?

I know exactly what caused this to happen. When bolt number 3 is being put into the head to hold the sprocket, one has to ensure that the washer is sitting on the race for the sprocket rather than the bolt itself. If the washer is sitting on the bolt and is tightened down, it puts all the stress of the motor on the side of the race and it breaks away. When this occurs, there is slack in the bolt and the sprocket and then eventually this happens.

when you go to reinstall everything if you need a new valve cover gasket lmk have spare sitting around from honda........sorry to hear about everything.......I have noticed that in the past after running mine hard for a while the same bolt that you broke can be re tightened just a bit it almost seems as if it just kinda works its way loose after high rpm runs like after a track day or something. dont know if its just me or if its on everyones car but i put some thread locker on it and not had a problem since.

good luck
