Default engine experts: what's this sound?

my 02 is making a mild fluttering sound mainly around 3-4k rpm, then it goes away at high rpms. its kinda like a "ptha ptha ptha ptha ptha" airy sound... not like pinging or clanking. seems almost like a vacuum leak or exhaust leak somewhere.

since my car was recently recovered from theft, i had honda do a compression test and everything looks good.

the car pulls solidly, feels great, but just doesnt sound as smooth at the lower rpms.

oh yeah, it also looks like black crap all over my tailpipes, like its running rich or something. oh and my commute gas mileage has dropped from 29 mpg to 26 mpg since my car was recovered from theft.

i only owned the car a week before it was taken, so there isnt a whole lot for me to compare it to, but again, at low rpms it doesnt sound as smooth as 5k and up.

any ideas? thx

I have the same problem. It does it around the lower rpm's sounds like a clicking fluttering noise. The car drives fine, I also thought it might be a vaccum leak. I have a aem cai could it be the hoses or something?
Thanks

Is it only while driving or have you listened in the engine bay while giving it throttle? Doing that may help you to locate the sound....

Mine does this too. Can't do it at a standstill, it requires some load on the engine.

but that would require time and energy on MY part :hehehe:

yeah, i should look a little further into it. doesnt seem like a big problem (yet?) - more annoying than anything. the engine just sounds SO smooth higher up, i just wanna hear that all the time

It's the 'whistling' of the throttle body, apparently a know issue nowadays. Sometimes a good cleanin' does the trick, but mine was replaced under warrantee.

Give the MAP sensor a whack. The symptoms you describe are classic MAP sensor issues.
